FABRICATORS NEEDED – NUCLEAR SUBMARINE CONSTRUCTION
Location: Newport News, Virginia
Contract Length: Up to 2 Years
Pay: $38.00 per hour
Overtime: $57.00 per hour
Per Diem: $140 per day for qualifying travelers
We are hiring experienced structural fabricators to support the construction of nuclear-powered submarines at one of the nation’s premier shipbuilding facilities. This is a long-term opportunity offering steady work, competitive pay, overtime potential, and daily per diem for qualified travelers.
Job Responsibilities

Fabricate and assemble structural steel components according to specifications.

Read and interpret complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, weld symbols, material specifications, datum lines, and reference lines.

Lay out structural piece parts for fabrication and assembly.

Use work packages and drawings to plan and complete assigned work.
-
Operate oxygen and propane burning and heating torches.
-
Perform air carbon arc gouging.
-
Use grinders, needle guns, and other vibratory tools.
-
Erect, set, fit, and assemble complex-shaped shell plates.
-
Install and assemble decks, bulkheads, longitudinals, trunks, and other ship structures.
-
Install and replace hull inserts and penetrations.
-
Install miscellaneous and complex equipment foundations.
-
Use molded lines and ship reference lines to complete structural work accurately.

Inspect completed work to ensure it meets dimensional, quality, and shipyard requirements.

Follow all OSHA, shipyard, and project safety procedures.
Required Experience and Qualifications
-
At least four years of structural fabrication, steel fabrication, shipbuilding, or related construction experience.

Previous steel fabrication or shipyard experience is strongly preferred.

Ability to read a ruler and work accurately with fractional dimensions.
-
Ability to understand complex blueprints, drawings, weld symbols, and work packages.
-
Experience using burning torches, heating torches, grinders, needle guns, and air carbon arc gouging equipment.
-
Ability to fabricate and assemble structural components according to detailed specifications.
-
Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, and in physically demanding environments.
-
Ability to work in changing temperatures and humidity levels.
-
Familiarity with OSHA regulations related to shipbuilding or heavy industrial construction.

Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and a respirator throughout the workday when necessary.

Must meet all required medical, respiratory, hearing, and safety qualifications before beginning work.
Preferred Experience
-
Shipfitting, shipwright, erection, or structural-setting experience.
-
Optical instrument experience, including levels and transits.
-
Tank-testing experience.
-
Previous submarine, naval vessel, or large ship construction experience.
Required Safety Qualifications
Candidates must be able to complete or provide documentation for applicable shipyard safety requirements, which may include:

Confined-space training

Hazard communication training
-
Respirator medical clearance, training, and fit testing

Fall-protection and body-harness training
-
Personal protective equipment training
-
Hearing conservation and audiometric testing
-
Hexavalent chromium medical clearance
Physical Requirements
-
Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.

Climb ladders and navigate shipboard work areas.
-
Lift, position, and handle structural materials and fabrication equipment.
-
Wear flame-resistant clothing, safety boots, hearing protection, respiratory protection, and fall-protection equipment.

Perform physically demanding work in varying temperatures and humidity levels.
