  • Per Diem: $140.00 per day (7 days per week for qualified travelers)

  • Perfect Attendance Bonus: $0.50 per hour, paid weekly

Position Summary

CraftForce is seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support long-term shipbuilding projects in Newport News, Virginia. This is a two-year opportunity offering competitive pay, daily per diem, overtime, and long-term stability.

The Outside Machinist is responsible for the installation, alignment, overhaul, testing, and repair of propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, valves, pumps, hydraulic systems, and other critical shipboard equipment. Candidates should possess strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and previous commercial or naval shipyard experience.

This position requires the ability to interpret complex blueprints, work safely in a shipyard environment, and perform precision machinery installation while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of commercial or naval shipyard experience as a First Class Outside Machinist.

  • Strong understanding of shipbuilding terminology and systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings, diagrams, and specifications.

  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations related to the shipbuilding industry.

  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience working independently and as part of a team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Machinery Installation & Alignment

  • Install main engines and propulsion plant equipment.

  • Install steam turbines and generators.

  • Install diesel engines.

  • Install pumps, motors, compressors, condensers, and heat exchangers.

  • Install hydraulic systems and components.

  • Install low and high-pressure air compressors.

  • Install sea valves and steam valves.

  • Install anchor windlasses, winches, arresting gear, and aircraft elevators.

  • Install weapons elevators.

  • Install deck and hangar doors.

  • Install mast and antenna assemblies.

  • Install ballast tank components.

  • Install noise reduction equipment.

  • Install deck ordinance.

  • Install hull inserts.

Precision Machining & Mechanical Work

  • Perform shafting and bearing work.

  • Fit, blue check, and install liners.

  • Perform optical alignments.

  • Operate lathes.

  • Operate boring bars.

  • Operate portable milling and drilling machines.

  • Drill and tap components.

  • Perform flange make-up.

  • Install and replace boiler tubes.

  • Install valve and pump packing.

  • Install lift check valves.

Valve, Pump & Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform steam and WOG valve overhauls.

  • Overhaul pumps and mechanical equipment.

  • Install and align ALRE pump/motor assemblies (M-179 & JX).

  • Operate centrifugal pumps.

  • Perform AC and refrigeration repairs.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Hydrostatic testing of systems.

  • Air conditioning hydro testing.

  • Test main engine operations.

  • Test boiler operations.

  • Perform distilling plant testing.

  • Conduct lube oil flushing.

  • Verify system cleanliness requirements.

  • Perform system grooming.

  • Maintain steam plant cleanliness standards.

Precision Measurement

  • Utilize micrometers, rulers, precision measuring tools, and alignment equipment.

  • Perform lapping and blue checking procedures.

  • Verify soft foot conditions and liner sizing.

  • Maintain precise tolerances throughout installations.

Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of basic ship systems.

  • Knowledge of propulsion systems.

  • Steam plant experience.

  • Familiarity with system cleanliness grades.

  • Experience with naval vessel machinery installations.

  • Experience operating cargo cranes.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces, elevated work areas, and industrial environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, climb, crawl, and work in confined spaces.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to work aboard ships, in dry docks, and industrial shipyard environments.

  • Ability to work at heights and around heavy machinery.

  • Ability to wear required PPE throughout the workday.
