What You’ll Be Doing:

 

As a First-Class Structural Welder, you’ll be working both in-shop and aboard ship performing high-integrity welds on sub-assemblies and structural components.

 

Your role is critical to building state-of-the-art nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.

 

What We’re Looking For:

 

  • Minimum 3-5 years of structural welding experience in commercial nuclear or marine environments

  • Proven experience with:

     

    • Pulse Arc (GMAW-P)

    • SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW

    • Multi-pass, all-position (2G/3G/4G) fillet and butt welds

    • Air carbon arc gouging

    • Heating with oxygen/propane torch

  • Proficient in reading weld gauges and working in physically demanding environments

  • Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards for shipyards

 

Welding Qualification Requirements:

 

All candidates must pass a Pulse Arc weld test and the following hands-on evaluations without training at the Newport News Welding School:

 

  1. All-position multi-pass butt welds (2G, 3G, 4G) using SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW-P

  2. Horizontal GMAW (2G)

  3. Air Carbon Arc Gouging Test

  4. Visual Weld Inspection Level I (4 hrs)

  5. Welder’s Vision Test

 

What Sets You Apart:

 

  • Strong background in shipbuilding or naval fabrication

  • Excellent attention to detail and safety

  • Ability to work in tight shipboard spaces, climb ladders, and maneuver around scaffolding

 

Important:

 

You must pass all required welding tests prior to starting – no exceptions.
