What You’ll Be Doing:
As a First-Class Structural Welder, you’ll be working both in-shop and aboard ship performing high-integrity welds on sub-assemblies and structural components.
Your role is critical to building state-of-the-art nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.
What We’re Looking For:

Minimum 3-5 years of structural welding experience in commercial nuclear or marine environments

Proven experience with:
-
Pulse Arc (GMAW-P)
-
SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW
-
Multi-pass, all-position (2G/3G/4G) fillet and butt welds
-
Air carbon arc gouging
-
Heating with oxygen/propane torch
-
-
Proficient in reading weld gauges and working in physically demanding environments
-
Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards for shipyards
Welding Qualification Requirements:
All candidates must pass a Pulse Arc weld test and the following hands-on evaluations without training at the Newport News Welding School:

All-position multi-pass butt welds (2G, 3G, 4G) using SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW-P

Horizontal GMAW (2G)
-
Air Carbon Arc Gouging Test
-
Visual Weld Inspection Level I (4 hrs)

Welder’s Vision Test
What Sets You Apart:

Strong background in shipbuilding or naval fabrication

Excellent attention to detail and safety

Ability to work in tight shipboard spaces, climb ladders, and maneuver around scaffolding

You must pass all required welding tests prior to starting – no exceptions.
